Krakout review by Grentz
Krakout is a very fun and addicting game that is very
similar to a breakout type of game. The install and setup
went very easy and I tried it both on the Dell X5 and X50v.
I should also say that this game is NOT VGA, but it does
look very good on the X50v which is a VGA device. There
are all kinds of unique icons and the images plus the background
is scrolling through space which gives a neat sense of depth,
yet does not distract from the game play.
To give new features from the standard breakout type game,
Krakout has all sorts of different types of blocks and icons
that you pick up that can do all sorts of different things.
Some of the block are invisible till you hit them, while
others may take up to 4 hits to make them disappear. This
adds interest and also different levels of difficulty. You
can select different difficulties when you start the game
and depending on the difficulty, different blocks and designs
are used.
In the game the controls work very well. Since the game
is designed to be used with your PDA on its side, the use
of the D-Pad is very easy and works great. You can also
use your stylus to hold and drag the paddle up and down
to hit the ball. You also could easily use the game with
your PDA in its normal position (with the D-Pad at the bottom)
but the score at the top of the screen is just on the side
then.
The game also has a great feature in which you can turn
on a Frames Per Second (FPS) counter that appears in the
upper corner. This is a simple option that you check in
the options menu and it seems to work pretty good. I get
around 50 FPS on the X50v.
Overall this is a great game and I highly recommend it.
It does get a little repetitive, but it also is the best
breakout/pong style game I have played in a long time.
For some reason I was not able to get my screen shot program
to work while running krakout, so here are some sample screen
shots from Ballshooter's Site.
